Australian Outback School Children's Oral Health Assessments, Urgent Oral Treatments (OUT), and Preventative Dentistry Service

Location: Cloncurry, Australia (Outback Queensland)

Project Outback Dental is a private dental service delivery initiative of Dr Garret Robles, a former Senior Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry at James Cook University in Australia.  Outback communities in Queensland Australia, particularly indigenous school aged children face difficulties getting oral health examinations and urgent dental treatments due to their community remoteness and lack of visiting dental professional able to regularly service the region.  POD's mobile dental van and state of the art mobile dental equipment addresses this need and has been an ongoing project that is now on its 3rd year.

POD is able to sustain its services for school children by accessing the Australian Federal Government's Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children as well as securing outsourcing contracts from Non Government Community Organisations and Aboriginal Medical/Health Services.  For children and their families not eligible for public funding, private health insurances are accepted with out of pocket fees matching government funded fee schedules.

On the week of 20th of March, POD will be in Cloncurry to examine and treat all school children at the Cloncurry State School with the endorsement of Queensland Health Mt Isa Hospital and Health Service.  Families of the children are also able to book for their oral health checks and treatment.

POD will likewise continue to service Hughenden and Richmond  and Julia Creek on another scheduled trip as it does every quarter.  To deliver the service to all 3 locations, POD's very own principal dentist, Garret Robles, and his wife and business manager, Dr Mary Ann Palma  will tow it's dental van more than 2000kms (24 hours equivalent) on its regular return trips from the city to the bush.
